How many miles are on the engine? What is the compression in the other cylinders? Why is the compression low? Maybe you do not need an engine. Maybe you have a bad valve or broken ring. I would next have a leak down test performed and have the oil pressure tested. If the bottom end is good, a top end overhaul can save a lot of money. 10 to 12 hours labor will replace both heads and the set of piston/cylinders. Can be done with out removing engine if mechanic has the right tools. If valve problem, may only have to do one side although the cause of the failure should be found.

Help, my 1987 sychro westphalia has 20 lbs. in the number 2 cylinder. So far I have checked Redding VW (4500.00 plus with a clutch) and Reno (4000.00 with the works, .) I probably need a new exhaust system, which is not included in either deal. I am leary because I love the vehicle and I don't want someone to screw it up. It also may need the steel left side coolant pipe, as a thick rust flake occurred near the exhaust. I want a fair price, a good warrantee, and the work done right the first time as close to central CA as possible. I will drive somewhere if mandatory. I subscribed to the list. jrieger@shasta.com
