Haven't check underthe vanagon, but my 79 loaf had a spigot that screwed on from underneath and had a piece of rubberthat would float around and block the orifice when the tank got low. Always wondered if the old pre 62 beetle reserve tap set up was either still available from aftermarket sellers and whether or not it would screw into a vanagon tap giving you a chance to run out of gas and then crawl under the car(your punishment for forgetting to fuel up) and flip the lever so you had the 1.3 gallon reserve to get you to the gas station.

Theoretically, the higher the spigot and the orifice pipe stick up, the more gas volume that will sit unused, I think?

>Chris, > >I don't think so. Contrary to all the conventional wisdom about sucking crud off the bottom of the tank, when your "run out of gas" there is still some gas left in the bottom of the tank. How much? I don't know but I would guess about 1 gallon (US). How do I know? >Last week end I took out my gas tank (nasty job but necessary) and replaced the seals and cross over tube. I drained out all of the gas that would come out of the tank nozzle (simulating running out of gas). There was still plenty of gas sloshing around inside of the tank. At that point I dropped the tank and siphoned out the last gas and donated it to my lawn mower. >I guess that the tank nozzle does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank. >Comments from other list members? > >Dennis Lockwood >91 Carat >Original Owner
