You must have been really flyin'! What you experienced is a problem but usually only in race cars. When you went through the corner, the g-forces caused the oil in the pan to slosh away from the oil pump pickup. Yes, engines do get destroyed by this phenomenon. There are expensive race tricks to solve this, but the best answer is either slow down in those curves or keep the oil sump filled a little higher.
