The sender location on the left side of the engine is actually the correct location for the oil pressure gauge. This location will check the pressure at the end of the oil circuit. The location at the back of the engine measures pressure directly off the pump which will give a higher reading. A clogged or restrictive oil filter will actually cause the reading here to increase which may mask a developing problem. Also, using the cam bearing location will allow the use of a dual post VDO sender allowing the warning light to remain intact without adding tees for the original switch.

Any advice on installing an oil pressure guage in my '89 westy? I got the VDO gauge, sender, and extention adaptor from Bus Depot. I've tried the archives on this with no luck. That oil pressure sender on the back of the engine looks really hard to get to. And then I wonder where do you locate the new sender? The extention is a fexible tube but it looks to me like it'd be very close to a couple of v belts there. What about putting it in place of the other oil sender (the one by the left head)? If anyone's done this job I'd love to hear about it.
