Subject: NEED ADVICE: buying 84 westy automatic (Ontario Canada)

A friend is looking at an 84 westy automatic. This is his first westy, he doesn't know a thing about them.

He spoke with owners and reported to me: Interior and cavas in good shape, engine in sound condition. at least 3 owners, current couple bought it 3 years ago from an old lady who had it for 8 years. Engine was replaced at 40,000 kms (??), so that puts 164,000 kms on new engine. Minor minor rust. Safety-ed. $6,500 CND.

He's going down to see it tomorrow, but unfortunately, I can't go down with him. So I suggested he takes it to a VW dealer (unless you can recommend a good Westy mechanic in Kingston Ontario Canada), and have a thorough inspection done, as per the following list.

Please help me complete this list and I will get back to him. Thanks, Éric

- Compression test on all cylinders - Pressure test on cooling system - Try stove-fridge-faucet - Try all heater and vent controls - Pop-top seal condition - Gas heater? Working? - Any fluid leaks (shocks, coolant, oil, brake, tranny) - Any front-end play (ball joints, tie-rods, rack-and-pinion, bushings) - LT tires ?? Still good ? - Any rust: around the windows, behind bumpers, behind the utility inlets - Age of the battery - ?? - ?
