Ever noticed how similar the Dodge/Plymouth Omni/Horizon look to the A1 Golf (nee Rabbit)? That's because the Chrysler is based on the Golf. I believe their 2.2 engine is a bored out 1.6 VW engine.

This wasn't uncommon in the cauught-with-their pants down era. Ford was lucky to be able to import the Escort from Ford Europe (they called it the "World Car") and GM quickly borrowed a design from Daewoo in Korea to build the Chevette.
