Actually....

I belive that the basic engine in the K-Car (Dodge Aries/Plymouth Reliant) was
Chrysler's own 2.2 liter unit, which also saw duty a few years later in the
minivans, which were themselves based on the K-Car platform. The design of the
2.2L engine may have had conceptual elements in common with the VW mill, but I
don't think it shared any components.

However, I do recall that the earlier Chrysler economy cars, the Omni and
Horizon, used a 1.7L VW engine of some type, probably the Rabbit engine.

The optional engines from Mitsubishi, which were used in a variety of
Chrysler-badged Japanese vehicles, came in 1.6, 2.0 and 2.6 liter flavors. The
larger mills were also used as optional engines in some of the domestic models,
and these had the balance shafts that were designed to balance out 2nd order
vibrations inherent in some larger, inline, 4-cylinder engines.

Thats all I can recall from having been in the foreigh auto parts business in the
'80's.
