I can't decide if I've set my timing properly or not. When I added a salvaged A/C system several years ago I replaced the pulley. The pulley has two marks on it, the one on the middle belt groove is wide and shallow and I assume is TDC while the one closest to the eng case and left of the other is a V notch which I assume to be the timing mark. The eng runs good timed to this mark (5 degrees ATDC), but it runs better when set at approx. 5 degrees BTDC. Several years ago it failed a state emissions test because of a bad cat and I had a guy adjust it to run it's cleanest and it seems he set the timing BTDC. My dilemma is do I set to recommended timing or where it runs best? Is it possible the pulley mark is wrong for my eng? Anyone have any thoughts about this? Thanks.
