Keep in mind that the reason for the developement of the synthetics is the need to provide a lubricant that does not break down under high heat conditions. The newer engines are designed to run hotter for better fuel burn, and an appropriate lubricant for such heat is necessary. The synthetics came from the racing world in the beginning and have worked their way into the conventional market.

I wonder what oils will be like when the ceramic engines that can burn nearly anything for fuel reach the market? Temps that would melt engine metals can be achieved with ceramics. Ceramics are reaching into other areas as well. The window tint industry is just now releasing some new ceramic coated tint films to the market. Where is it all going?
