Subject: Fwd: AW: Why Different Front Axels For Front Diff Lock?

More wisdom from Axel:

1. The syncros with a front diff lock have different part numbers than
those without the front diff lock for the front axels because the CV
joint boots on those only have three folds rather than four. WOW!

2. Bumper wisdom. Get the side bumpers from Winkler and the fronts and
backs from Projectztwo. Get the front and back bumpers from Winker if you
are very price sensitive.

I found this information to be extremely helpful.

Possibly you can answer two additional questions:

1. In the factory ETOS/ETKA it shows that the 14" version has
CV-Joints in size 100 on the axels whereas the 16" has 108 size.
Then, there is a different part number for 108 size CV-joints that have a
differential lock in the front.

Do you know why the front axels would have a different part number if
there is a differential lock in the front? Are they stronger
somehow?

2. Your front bumpers. Do they come from Projectztwo or Winkler? Are the
Winker ones good looking too?

Only godfather is knowing, what sometimes happen in the brains of
VW-engineers.
The differenz is the outer rubber boot. Without diff lock it has 4 folds
(or wrinkles??). With diff lock it has only 3.
May be in the mind of the VW guys that is a kind of enforcement. I never
tooked care on this.

2. Front and rear are
Projectzwo.
The side bumpers I fitted from Winkler because they are constructed more
clever.

To compare both let me state at
follows:
1. Winkler is more or less a Projektzwo plagiat, produced in Israel and
is 50% less then projektzwo.
2. All Winkler pipes on front and rear are only about 52 mm in Diameter,
Projektzwo is 70 mm
3. Winkler side bumper is also 70 mm but totaly other designed. You can
go on with the standard lifter without remove the bumper.
4. Winkler front is much easier to install and to remove and doesn´t has
the curved pipes under the bus. That makes it easier to remove the front
protection pan. If you use projektzwo for the front you should modify the
pan to keep it removable. If not, hopefully you never must repair
anything outside the workshop or outside your vacancy.
5. Winkler rear bumper is also easier to install and to remove but it is
mis-designed. It does not work with an original Syncro trailer coupling
because Mr. Winkler has forgotten, if he released the production, that
the syncro coupling is different from the 2WD.
It is not a fun. In 1996 I was his first customer with a syncro and we
had telefon and letter fights along time until I drove the 500 km and
required from him to install his bumper to my bus. From this moment he
changed his brochure and excluded syncro trailer coupling from the
applikations.

Summary:
Winkler front bumper looks acceptable but not perfect, its a little bit
petite. It does not protect the front of the bus so perfect as the
PZwo.
Winkler side bumper looks and works better then the PZwo, easier and more
clever to install.
Winkler rear looks unaccable from the point of design, it is also to
petite and does not work with the syncro-coupling.

the result you can see
installed at my current van:
Front and rear PZwo, side Winkler.
