Once in a pinch (haha), I tried to do this on an '84 with a copper radiator. It was futile because the tube was so friable that every time I pinched it off an adjacent leak would spring up. But, if you do manage to stop the leaking and head into the desert, it might be advisable to carry mucho H2O and travel at night.
