Subject: '90 trans, prep for application
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I was able to purchase an ACW tranmission that was in a 90 vanagon. The miles are unknown, but it moves through the gears smoothly. I'm cleaning it before puttint it in my '84 vanagon. It looked like grease in the axle mounts that I was going to refresh when installing, but when I wiped it out, it was hardened and rubbery. It unstuck and came right off in my rag. I'm wondering if this is something that I should not have done. Do I need to reapply this "compound", or will regreasing do?

What grease should I use on the axle mounts?

Are there any other things I should _definitely_ do when replacing the transmission? The '90 came with the throw-out bearing still attached. It looks hardly worn, with no contact grooves formed. I rolls smoothly too. I intend to inpect the clutch and pressure plate when I have the old trans out.

Thanks, as usual, Bradley Flubacher
