Hi Larry,

I had the same thing happen on my Syncro (although this could happen on any Vanagon). From a list member I was told to clean it up and put silicone sealer around the cap to keep it tight. I found out about this AFTER I had regreased and bolted the 1/2 shaft back in place so I will do this in 15-20K miles or so.

I spoke to my local mechanic and he said that he would be able to replace the tranny seal which may be going - thus the leaking. I looked in Bentley and it appears to be a royal PITA just to replace this seal around the axle shaft out of the differential. I'll take my chances and add oil to the tranny thank you very much.

Good luck.
