Unfortunately using the 2.1 exhaust won't work either. Both the cooling system and exhaust were redesigned to accommodate the cooler. There is no room for it to be installed and plumbed given the 1.9 water pump/tstat housing design. With the 2.1 the water pump is different, and the tstat is moved to a manifold on top of the engine. It is not worth the cost and effort to replace both the cooling system and exhaust to do this conversion. Not to mention that the 2.1 components are more costly and offer identical performance.

Tapping the water pump and tstat housing and using a remote filter adapter is the ideal solution. Coolant flow to the cooler is controlled by the tstat just as it is to the engine, and you won't have to get under the car to change the filter next to those hot pipes ever again!

I have used a 2.1L on a 1.9 before with no boltup problems. Then this would allow the use of the oil cooler with no exhaust clearence problems, then plumb in the lines. > > If you have a bad exhaust buy the 2.1L.
