<< So I wonder what is the overall reliability of the automatic transmission in Vanagons. Do they have any known faults, or are they fine as long as they are properly maintained ? How does a Vanagon with A/T perform - as well, or poorer than with stickshift ? >>

the automatics on the wbx vanagons (from '83.5-'91) are far superior in reliability than the manual 4spd trannys. the 4spd manuals develop a crack in the 3-4 gear slider hub, necessitating the replacement or complete rebuild of the tranny. top end performance is the same in a auto, or a manual. FWIW, ive had quite a few of both, and see no difference in performance. ppl say the manuals are quicker off the start. i havent seen it. besides, if you want performance, buy a sports car... chris
