I just got a termostat from the Bus Depot which is part number 025 121 113F which is listed in their catalogue as "stock" for ALL vanagons 83-91, with an opening temperature of 87 degrees celsius. My question is do the 1.9 liter water-cooled engines, which I have, use the same thermostat settings as the later 2.0 liters. My Bentley lists the opening temp of the thermostat at 85 degrees celsius--fully open at 105 degrees celcius. The above listed thermostat from Bus Depot is german manufactured by BEHR and lists it's opening temp at 87 degrees celcius. For anyone with the knowledge or microfiche does the 1.9 liter use a different part number and a slightly cooler thermostat than the 87 degree thermostat I have just recieved? Does the 2 degrees celcius make a difference in the cooling of the 1.9 engine? Do the later Vanagons (2.0 liter) use this cooler 87 degree celsius thermostat, and so is it just considered easier to use one part number for both engines? Any information will be appreciated. I want to avoid finding the engine will run hot and having to replace the thermostat twice. Actually I want to avoid bleeding the coolant system twice. (BTW In this process I'm replacing the radiator as well with a new genuine VW unit. But I'm concerned with the "exact" specifications for the thermostat--because,you know, it's a water boxer.)
