I'm having this done on my 88GL right now. Though you can have this done by the local shop, DON'T!!!!!!! There is a liability issue here and it falls on the shoulders of VW. The company had a situation in which they created the problem in the first place. It is now an official VW safety issue. Let them fix it(doesn't cost you anything - it's a safety recall) and bear the responsibility ---and liability --- if something goes wrong after the fix. Once you go them, if your van is elgible, they MUST fix it. They have no choice.
