I'd be interested, but maybe a simpler solution would be to redesign the J pipe to give more room for the muffler and cat. There is plenty of room to have it jog over to the left six inches, but a new support bracket would also need to be fabricated.

Would the 2.1 fit without the cat? Mine is empty, and it came from the factory that way. I pass emissions with no problem.

Note that it isn't the engine, it's the model year that is the determining factor. All 83.5-85 Vanagons use the same exhaust system, regardless of which engine is installed. You are looking at 2 1/2 years of production vs. six, but without knowing how many are still on the road It'll be hard to estimate demand.
