Subject: how to remove alt/gen. pulley bolt. was: Re: how remove stove top?

I'm having trouble removing the fan belt on my Volkswagen. It's a 77' so if anyone can tell me the bolt size for this alternator that would be just fantastic. The size would be in metric right? instead of the crescent wrench I can try to attack it with a long wrench of the right size, one end box the other with the opening. The bolt is so tight that not even with a little lube and hitting the wrench with a hammer did any good. All it did was bend the pully notch where you stick the screwdriver in to keep it from moving. Don't know if that is a very bad thing. One other thing. The preheater hose that goes to the air filter. Should it be of a larger diameter of the other two? The end of the usual hose does not fit over the opening unless you cut it on both sides so it can expand. I don't like the idea of having to cut a new hose because it wouldn't last very long. The cut would travel the length of the tube over time. I noticed this as I had to replace the other hose that runs from the cooling shroud to the heater boxes because the other one has gotten old and rotten and ruptured over time. TIA

Hi Bill,

Somewhere on the web is a scanned manual for the Westy stove. I thought I had it bookmarked, alas no, and I can'tfind it with my favourite search engine. I'll try to remeber to check at home tonight for the copy that I printed out to check for the URL and post it. As I remember, there is a funny key thing (that has disappeared from almost all Westys) that fits into the slots in the burner so you can unscrew and remove that and get underneath.

Cheers, Doug Alcock '84 Westy Toronto, Canada
