Subject: alternator tightening bolt
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

anybody had to replace their alternator tightening bolt? the one that you loosen and tighten to adjust the tension on the alternator belt??

mine is getting buggered up after all these years, and so i ordered some from Camelback ... got the bolts and they are completely wrong for my bus. it's the right part number from the microfiche, but still the wrong bolt.

my 88 and my 87 both have the same setup: there is a hex-head bolt, with a big shoulder under the hex-head, that screws through the slot in the adjusting arm and into a cast-on big bump on the alternator. the end of the bolt appears to be very pointed, almost screw-like.

the one vw sent me has a round mushroom-like head, with a square shoulder underneath, next to the threads. i can see where it would fit into the adjusting slot, but not with the alternators i have (with the big bump).

before i go looking around at NAPA and elsewhere, has anyone else had this problem? if so, how did you solve it? where did you get the new bolts? i guess i could always just get a same-thread bolt and put a big washer under there. :)

thanks. joel
