Subject: Oil pressure standard -- 13.1 or 29 PSI?
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I installed an oil pressure gauge on my 89 GL and I measure 22 PSI at 2000 RPM after a warm-up by driving 20 miles at 65 MPH. I am using Castrol 20W-50. At present I have no way to measure oil temperature, but I will work on that.

The Bentley manual says at 2000 RPM and 176 degrees F, the minimum pressure should be 29 PSI. However, the low oil pressure warning buzzer is not supposed to sound until 13.1 PSI. This seems contradictory, unless 29 PSI is actually the minimum standard for a new engine.

What minimum pressure, at the stated temperature and RPM, do you accept as normal in an apparently healthy 2.1 waterboxer? What pressure do list members observe in new engines?
