Subject: O2vsH2O and heat?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi everyone In my last post I asked what was a good year to buy and in the responses I found that lots of people with water cooled vanagons said they are easier to work on then air cooled vans. Then people with air cooled vans replied with air cooled is easier to work on then water cooled vanagons. So whats the real answer here? What system is really the easier one to work on? Also which system is the cheapest to maintain, cost of parts, etc... With those of you driving air-cooled vanagons, how are they in the winter? Do they start up easy? With my 1963 beetle I would startit and have to keep my foot on the gas for a minute or two or it would die, becuase the carb would be frozen, literally covererd in a white crystalized frost. Then I would have to let the motor sit for a minute or two while heat rising from the motor and exhuast would defrost the carb, then I could start it and it would run like a dream. Does this happen with the fuel injected air-cooled engines? And last but not least, how does the heater system work in an air-cooled van? Did all vans come with heat or is it an aftermarket thing? How well, fast does it heat the van? Thanks in advance for all your help. And as an update on my situation for those who might care (wishful thinking) I am still trying to sell my 2000 astro cargo van, so I can buy a westy, I have lowered the price so hopefully I'll get some bites on it soon.
