Greg, I added a carpet remnant in my 86 and I didn't fasten it down at all. It fits pretty snug in there and doesn't move around (you can tuck it under the edges of the cabinet a little). I left it like this so I can take it out and shake it out and vacuum it easily (I have two big hairy dogs). That's the easiest solution - just cut to fit.
