When I say "went out", the wheel basically should have fallen off the van but didn't. Like I said, I realized what was happening and was able to shut the van down immediately. If I had been cruising on the highway, this could have been really ugly. The PO is an Air Force Pilot and he seemed to really know the van. In addition, I had a VW shop in southern Oklahoma do an inspection and he claimed to have thoroughly checked it out and said everything was in order. Guess he didn't check the bearings.
