Subject: '85 Starter/Alt. Replacement
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I decided to upgrade the starter and alternator on my '85 1.9l due to slow cranking worries. Pep Boys came through with re-man. items that came with a "lifetime" warranty. Starter was a special order (ordered Saturday, picked it up Tuesday) and the alternator was in stock. Starter was $160 and alternator $106, (minus core charges). It does crank better and the alternator is putting out more voltage. I measured 14.3 V at the alternator, 14.1V at the battery. With high-beams, heater , defroster on, it dropped to 13.7V at the battery. I think this is OK. I am considering adding an additional wire to get more juice to the starter. What size would be worth installing? (This would parallel the stock wire, which seems too small.) The other alternative would be to move the battery to the back bench seat where it would be 2' from the starter and run one larger gauge wire directly to the starter and use the existing wire to power the fusebox. As a side note, the new starter came with a replacement bronze bushing. I did not use it. I wasn't sure if I could get the old one out without dropping it into the bellhousing. I put it on the shelf for future use when the motor is out.
