That is what I thought, also.  What puzzled me was that although the door had
to be slammed harder with the windows up, it did not feel as if it were
working against an air damper.  When I checked it carefully, I found that the
door had sagged and was not entering the strike properly.  The strike had to
lift the latch side of the door 1/8" or so in order to latch.  I tried to
correct this alignment but, it was beyond the limits of the strike and hinge
adjustments.  So, a couple of U-shims under the lower hinge were installed.
The door now closes the first time everytime without its former tinny rattle.

Perhaps what everyone thinks demonstrates Teutonic excellence is really a
case of a Kraut going sour in its old age.
