When I replaced the clutch in my 83 2.0L AC V-gon I had to split the engine and trans. Your situation is a little different but it seems to me that taking the engine out entirely (rather than letting it hang under your bus) would make it a whole lot easier to work on. You can get the engine (and yourself) up off the floor, even if it's just on some cinderblocks. That will make for easier access to the engine, an easier tear down, and will generally keep things cleaner for the parts of your engine you aren't tearing down.
