Our Canadian prairie winters can get to -40 Celsius and colder. It's not unusual to have weeks of -30 Celsius weather with high wind chill factors. Ford, GM and other domestic car manufacturers have cold weather testing stations in Manitoba. I don't know where VW tests their cars for cold weather operation but it's not cold enough!
