If the noise is sort of a squealing, shreiking noise, I'll bet it's the belt not the bearings. I learned this the hard way on a Jetta after replacing the alternator. Try this: (usual warnings, waivers, your on your own etc. go here) with the engine running, try scraping the inside surfaces of the belt with a long screwdriver or file or something with an edge. This is dangerous, do it carefully. The idea is to scuff up the surface of the belt to get rid of the shiny glaze that is causing the noises. I did this on our Vanagon a few days ago, and the noise disappeared.
