Subject: Golf hubcaps on Vanagon
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

I see on e-bay there is an 87 Weekender for sale and you can see in the photo it has fairly late-model Golf hubcaps. They are full wheel covers with a slotted edge. (the link to the e-bay auction is at the bottom of this e-mail)

I tried to fit a set of these whellcovers on my 1983.5 Vanagon but there was no way. They wouldn't even get close to catching the wheel because the hubs stuck out too far. As I recall both on the front and the rear the hubs were a problem, but definately on the front. And the hub on my bus kept the Golf wheelcover a good 1/2 inch away from the wheel.

Did the distance the hub protruded change on the later Vanagons? Or were there 6" steel wheels offered that may offset the hub protrusion enough to accomodate the Golf hubcaps? (my bus has the 5 1/2" inch steel wheels) Anybody done this?

And come to think of it if this e-bay bus is a Wolfsburg shouldn't it have alloy wheels?

I'm sorry I know we've been through this. But what I heard last time was "sure the Golf hubcaps will fit". But the hubs are definately in the way on my bus so what's up?

The link is if anyone's interested, The current price was about $2,600. But it'll go way up if the past is a guide. and there's something fishy about this particular bus, like "there's some seam rust but this is real easy to fix":
