Hi Dan,

Forget those VW specific devices. The VW1367 is an regular engine analyzer & 1473 is an adapter to check ignition timing. If the distributor hasn't been disturbed, the timing doesn't need to be checked. A "tune-up" really isn't performed anymore. The engine performance portion of a 30,000 mile service should be:

Check compression Replace spark plugs Replace air filiter Replace fuel filter Replace cap & rotor Check Hall sensor 3 pin connector & boot Check & clean ign coil connections Check spark plug wires w/ohm meter Check idle stab valve w/amp meter Check and adjust idle speed w/tach Check O2 sensor function w/voltmeter THROUGH VISUAL INSPECTION OF ALL ENGINE WIRING!!!

You could add a thing or two or do this more frequently if needed but this is it. All that is needed is a hand-held DVOM. You may want to consider "adjusting" the valve clearance--see technical information provided by Bob Donalds of Boston engine about this point.

Regards, John
