Subject: 12v AC power inverter in a Vanagon GL
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Hi Folks,

I am wanting to drop in a 12v 300w AC power inverter (from Circuit City) in my 1991 Vanagon GL.

I bought the longer version, that allows direct connection to the battery, rather then just to the cigarette lighter. I am installing mine, so I can run my view cam in my bus, with out having to rely on the battery. I would also like to use my Powerbook some times.

I was curious, if anyone else has installed one of these in their vans, semi permanently?

My first thought, is that I would like the inverter out of sight. Under the passenger side seat seems like a good place for it.

I love the idea of installing it, so it is clean, and easy to get to. I have considered, using a Sawzill to cut out a small faceplate, the same size as one end of the inverter, in the seat structure, so I can have full time access to the outlet and on/off switch.

Would anyone have any thoughts on cutting the metal, below the passengers seat? My hope, is that I would not be compromising the seats structure and integrity.

Has anyone installed a DC power inverter in their bus? I would love to hear suggestions, or especially see pictures of where you put it.

I would consider putting it under the drivers side seat, except I have a CD changer there.

Please feel free to email me directly with ideas, experiences, suggestions or pictures.

Thanks much,

Dave Bowers :) 1991 Vanagon GL 54k
