I've read all that I can find on this being a new vanagon owner and it seems you can prolong (put off) the fix by using stop leak. Mine aren't leaking on my 84, supposably redone, but I've flushed it out several times hoping to get out all old crud and then next weekend I'm going to put in Dex-cool antifreeze. From what I've read they don't have the head problem in Europe. Therefore it must be the gasoline/fuel injection, they have carbs, or the coolant. VW has always wanted phosphate free and ours always has contained it until dex-cool.
