I the nut is 46mm as far as I can tell on my 84 vanagon and it has to be tightened to some redicules amount requiring not only the socket with a breaker bar but also a water pipe over the breaker bar for extra force. Needless to say you'll need the same amount to remove it. When I had my 73 years ago, I just got the 84 a month ago, I bought a very large sears adjustable wrench and put the pipe over that. However to get to the rear breaks on my 84 I didn't need to remove the nut, there's a couple of small bolts holding the drum to the hub, I've done mine already! A much easier task!
