Just a small note of correction here. My '82 Vanagon Westfalia Diesel was delivered with a DZ transmission and a 5.86 R&P final drive ratio. Its still in there happily spinning with 1.8L 8V Digifant motor. The combination of insulation and sound system seriously eliminates engine noise. My daughter thinks I'm going deaf. Howeverr, I'm sure I measure 1.5 inches higher manifold vacuuum at 80 mph on the 210 freeway (LA) with Eine Kleine Nachtmusik bei Mozart, and the Westfalia is positively dangerous with Verdi or Beethoven.
