Porsche aircooled conversions are fairly common in all models of rear-engined VW vans, and generally give good results. But pick a good engine or you'll be in bor big bucks. And DON'T trust a VW trans to handle the power/torque increase. Go for a late Porsche 915 or 1987-89 G50 (other years of G50 have too long a bellhousing and will not fit).

I am told the 2.7 six is trouble-prone. I'd say, from my VERY limited knowledge of Porsches, that a 3.0 or 3.2 would be the berries.

I am in the process of negotiating purchase of a G50 from Germany or Holland (20th Street Auto in Phoenix, AZ refuses to give me prices!) to put in my 84 Caravelle, along with a Subaru SVX engine. My 094 5-speed wasn't up to a 174hp Holden 3.8 V6.
