I would use a Dremil tool with a wire cup brush.  Removes all the old gasket
with no damage to surface.  I have done this on several occasions and has
worked great.

For the bolt hole, get a 8 mm x 1.25 pitch tap and use that to clean the
holes.  It can also be used in a number of other places on the engine.
