I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 'Whole Earth Catalog'
heater.  Take a 6" clay flower pot and put it upside down over a stove
burner.  Crack a window and light the burner.  Let it cook for fifteen
or so minutes.  Turn off the gas, close the window and enjoy the
radiant heat.  Repeat as necessary.
