I think the important issue to prevent that is to not EVER get the flower pot wet. I think that the clay (or terracotta, or whatever) is rather porous and heating it causes the water to boil out and BANG! You could probably bake the flower pot at home in the oven at a low temperature for a while to make sure all the water is out of it before you take it camping.
