Hi Gary, By my calculations your overall ratio in 4th will be 4.1811, a 2wd with .85 4th and 4.86 diff will give you 4.131. The same ratio for all intents and purposes. This is indeed a simpler and cheaper way than changing the diff ratio!(ANY 091 boxes are as rare as hens teeth in this part of the world). My interest is I have a '82 transporter that was originally powered by a 1600cc air-cooled engine (avail in Europe, don't know about North America). This also has a 5.43 diff but 0.82 4th as stock. I am in the process of putting in a 2.3 Audi engine, and have calculated at 118kph (68mph) the engine will be turning 4000rpm, a bit high for my liking. I will investigate the different 4th ratio for the box I am rebuilding at present. Maybe find a source in Australia, as at present exchange rates parts from the US become veeeery expensive. Thanks and regards for the info. John. New Zealand.
