You'll find all you want and more in the Bosch handbook _Automotive Symbols and Circuit Diagrams_ available from Bentley for about $15.

These are numbers pertaining to *terminals, not wires* -- a wire may have a different numbered terminal on each end.

No, it's the low-side terminal on the ignition coil (i.e. the one that goes to the ignition module and tach).

31 -- Ground

>15= Switched Positive (Hot when ignition is on) >30= Always hot "12 Volt" >x=?

This is a VW designation for the circuit which is switched on by the ignition switch but off during cranking. In the V'gon powers headlights, wipers, rear defrost, heater blower. Also called "Load Reduction Circuit"

>97=? >97a=?

Dunno either of these.

85, 86 -- relay coil terminals, 85 is ground side 87 -- relay output terminal, N.O. 87a -- relay output terminal, N.C. Note that this in current spec, the input to a relay N.O. circuit is 88 instead of 30, and the output is 88a instead of 87; the N.C. circuit is 87 and 87a respectively. But I don't think the Vanagon diagrams use that.

53x -- wiper stuff 55 -- fog lamp 56x -- headlight stuff 57x, 58x -- running lights, panel lights, etc. 61 -- alternator light
