I used to have a '74 camper with a 27MHZ CB antenna mounted on an aluminium plate about 12" square bolted to a roof rack and this worked OK. I now have a 477MHZ UHF radio with the antenna mounted on my roo bar and this works OK. ============================================================ From: Steve Schwenk <sxs@concentric.net> Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 14:29:58 -0700 To: "vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com" <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com>, "syncro@egroups.com" <Syncro@egroups.com> Subject: [Syncro] Ham/CB Antenna Location

Has anyone had luck mounting a ham or cb antenna to the steel roof under the luggage carrier up front on a westy? Is there enough ground plane to achieve good SWR? I do not want to do a side mount...unless the performance would be significantly better. I also do not want to spend money on a good radio if i am never going to be able to transmit well due to the poor ground plane.

Thanks for any info. And I'd love to hear any other good mounting locations that have been tested on a meter. steve
