This happened to me on my '85, actually the mounting bracket broke, so I wasn't in quite as bad shape. They are studs. I was never able to get one of the bolts back on so my alternator bracket has been attached with one bolt and two studs. The only way I can tighten a second bolt is to remove a cooling pipe as far as I can tell. I check it periodically and it still holds with one bolt after two years.
