First, which end of the battery - alternator wire are you unhooking? At the battery, starter or at the alternator?

If it is either of the first two, it sounds like the black wire (current track 15) in the black distro box in the forward driver side portion of your engine compartment might be some how contacting the high current post in said box. That post has power to it from the wire that runs to the battery/starter/alternator. Hrm, then there is the possibility that your iginition switch is not working properly, but hrm, how to easily test that without burning out your wiring if it is the former issue.

If it shuts off when you remove the connection at the alternator (the big post connection on the alternator right?), then I need to go dig my Bentley out my Bentley from the pile of stuff that it's under.

If you just replaced the coil, there shouldn't be anyway that current track 30 is hitting track 15 around the coil area... Though you also must have been playing around the black relay box and that also has both track 15 and 30 in it... Basicly for the engine to keep running, you need to be getting both current to the digifant control unit and to the coil. Both of these are powered/actuated from current track 15 (which runs directly from one leg of 15 off the ignition switch back to the black distro box in the engine compartment when it makes a connection and splits to - I believe the digifant relay, the coil, and the 5 amp fuse for the o2 sensor heater.
