I only run higher octane fuel when I'm using the air conditioner in really hot weather. I'd say, if the van doesn't knock on "hard" acceleration (mutually exclusive terms when we're talking about Vanagons, I know), I'd use regular. Just don't let those gas station attendants you have there in Oregon (by statute!) fill your crankcase with unleaded by mistake! It's happened.
