Subject:      Another coil fire

On our trip through the eastern US we lost power while driving down a long
hill on a Maryland interstate highway. After coasting to a stop I smelled
burning but a quick look underneath confirmed nothing currently on fire. I
had a cheap bike rack holding two bikes which prevented easy access to the
engine. Further investigation revealed the coil had caught fire and dripped
burning material  down over the ignition wires and part of the wiring
harness. The fire blew out before the vehicle was stopped. The VW
dealership who installed a new coil, ignition wire set and new hose stated
that coil fires are fairly common. Our CAA PLUS membership made the tow in
(on a flat bed) quick, convenient and hassle free. We were repaired and on
our way before the end of the day.
