Here is what I did on my 84 newly gotten vanagon. Sanded all loose rust off, don't go too deep you may find the inside. With a pick type thing bent 90 degrees at the end, I removed as much old sealer from the seams as possible. Then I used duro Extend that turned the rust to blue, kind of like gun bluing. I then used DAP bath tub caulk in the seams removing excess with a wet cloth. It's a latex type product and I've had to remove it in the past and it's been a hassel so I figured I would try it. I then used primer and coated the whole van from the roof line down with a fresh coat of brown paint. It looks super. I don't know how long it will hold up but at least I've stopped the rust.
