Subject: newbie update, 85 stuff FS...

Hi all,

I posted a message a couple of days ago about stumbling into an '85 in need of engine repair. I've since spent a bunch (way too much) of time scanning the archives, checking out Vanagon websites, and generally cramming on VW info. Thanks for all of your replies, they've been helpful.

I've come to the realization that for me to commit the kind of attention that a Vanagon will require, it's going to have to be a Westfalia camper (or an overwhelmingly-cool air cooled bus.) ;-) With that in mind, I'm sorta torn about what to do with this '85 Vanagon. A few listers have suggested parting it out if it turns out to not be what I wanted.

Since I know in advance that it's not what I want, I have a bit of a moral/kharma dilemna. I could just pass the deal on to another lister, or I could part it out and raise money towards the camper I really want. If I could pass parts on to listers at good prices, and make a couple of bucks towards a Westy, would that be so bad?

So, if you're in need of parts from an '85 Vanagon 7 pass., let me know, and we'll see what shakes out. I don't really want to get into stripping parts and shipping all over the planet, so there'd have to be significant interest in a few parts to get me to break it up. I'd think the engine would be a good core, as I'm told it runs well, but smokes when warmed up.

I've seen what whole Vanagons in need of work are selling for, and I'd be willing to turn this thing around complete for _much_ less than that. I know it's a little bit (struggling for the right word here) jerky for me to do that, but I've been struck with this need for a Vanagon, and I'm also house shopping, so there's not a lot of money available right now for toys. If you'd like the whole thing, let me know, and make an offer.

If I'm way out of line, let me know... I could also be interested in a trade for some VW (liquid)/Audi/? car to use as a commuter weapon if you've got something like that sitting around.

thanks, Craig Faison cfaison@magpage.com
