Being a former US Navy atmospheric/oceanographic forecaster, I'll have to assure you that ships do not sail straight through the weather regardless. Here is a decent presentation on how ships avoid weather at sea. While they do there best, radical changes can occur in very short periods of time. So for a very good reason with this being the end of the tropical storm season and the relatively small size of the transport vessel a diversion to NYC was an appropriate choice.
