J,

I used 1/8" tempered, screen-back hardboard (it may have been branded Masonite). I believe the key word is tempered which indicates an exterior grade. The screen-back material is stiffer than the regular. It is also nicer with which to work. I would recommend using a USA manufactured version of this stuff because it will not readily shred like the imported garbage. Even the USA stuff is cheap. I did not bother to paint it, still, after 5 years all I could say is that it got really dirty.
